Antwerp Regional Police Office

STRABAG Belgium was awarded the turnkey contract by AG Vespa for the construction of a new police station, an underground basement/parking garage, exterior landscaping of a green inner courtyard, and a compact apartment building.

The site is located in the centre of Antwerp, and the historic façade on Lange Gasthuisstraat had to be preserved. The new buildings are connected by a green inner courtyard with the underground basement and parking garage beneath.

The assignment included the restoration of the historic façade, structural works, finishing works, and technical installations for the two new buildings, as well as an underground basement and parking garage. In addition, there was a conditional component to the contract: the interior joinery of the police station, the design of the reception area, and the landscaping of the surrounding environment.

The original scope also included the construction of an apartment section and the entrance to the car park. However, this was removed from the contract due to last-minute changes caused by the presence of underground anchors from the adjacent building and for budgetary reasons.

Vaulted concrete columns were integrated into the interior. Their execution required a specialised technique in which STRABAG has extensive expertise.

It was a complex site, primarily due to the logistical challenges of its very central location in Antwerp’s inner city and the extremely limited site space. In addition, the historic façade that had to be preserved was in very poor condition, and the wide variety of finishing materials required intensive coordination.
