With the launch of the new certification scheme for sustainable construction sites of the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council), STRABAG Belgium is the first company in the Benelux to initiate for certification process for sustainable construction sites. The certification covers all essential DGNB criteria for sustainable construction sites.

Learn more about DGNB

With the introduction of the new certification by DGNB, a new standard is being set for sustainable construction site processes. The comprehensive guidelines are divided into five overarching criteria that demonstrate sustainability from the beginning to the end of the construction process — going far beyond environmental protection. They also cover site organisation, resource conservation, health and social aspects, communication with the local community and quality control. "Sustainable construction is not only about the outcome, but also about how it is achieved. With its commitment to the new DGNB certification for sustainable construction sites, STRABAG-ZÜBLIN is truly doing pioneering work," says Johannes Kreißig, Executive Board Member of the DGNB.

Sustainable construction is the STRABAG standard

With the Basic Sustainable Construction Site Certificate, which applies to the entire STRABAG-ZÜBLIN company, STRABAG Belgium already meets the essential sustainability standards outlined in the DGNB's requirements package. The first project to be certified was the Saalburgallee construction project in Frankfurt am Main for ZÜBLIN Germany. In the Benelux, the first project to begin certification under to DGNB guidelines is the Bargiekaai project of STRABAG Belgium in Ghent.

Thanks to efficient and largely standardised processes, STRABAG Belgium will be able to quickly apply DGNB regulations to other construction sites. Even before the launch of the new DGNB certificate, STRABAG had already built up a long track record of sustainable construction projects, thanks to the use of:

    Energy Management

The systematic and continuous application of energy management ensures transparency in energy consumption and supports site teams in reducing their CO2 emissions.

Getting people, materials, and equipment to the right place at the right time. Using LEAN management methods, the construction process is precisely coordinated within the team. This helps to avoid waiting times or scheduling issues, enabling projects to be completed in a structured and efficient manner.

    Digitization of processes

Apps facilitate documentation and verification during project management. For example, app-based digital checklists support compliance with high standards for health, (occupational) safety, and environmental protection (HSE) during construction site inspections.

Sustainable construction processes - from earthwork to completion

DGNB certification is a planning and management tool that focuses on the site process and project execution throughout the construction phase. It covers all work carried out during the construction, renovation or modification of buildings and other structures. The construction site is assessed based on evidence uploaded into DGNB's system software. This evidence is reviewed by DGNB through the platform. The basis for full certification is the DGNB pre-certificate, which can be obtained at the start of the project. Final certification is awarded upon completion of the work, provided that the sustainability criteria have been continuously met.
