Innovative trench silos

STRABAG Belgium carried out the following assignment for ILVO (Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research): the construction of circular and sustainable trench silos using innovative concrete (450 m³).

The material stored in these silos (such as corn pulp) is acidic, and this acidity typically corrodes concrete to such an extent that the lifespan of silos is significantly reduced.

In total, 6,000 m² of new silos were built (12 in total): one-third using conventional concrete, one-third using concrete with recycled aggregates (which together formed Lot 1), and one-third using geopolymer concrete with alkali-activated binders (Lot 2).

STRABAG Belgium was responsible for Lot 2, which included four silos constructed with geopolymer concrete.

For this project, we collaborated with ResourceFull (a laboratory specialising in alkali-activated binders) and AC Materials.

Although the contract value was relatively modest, this became the largest eco-concrete project in Belgium to date.
