MRCC Ostend

STRABAG Belgium carried out the renovation of the building housing the Marine Guidance Department and the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre (MRCC).

The MRCC serves as the primary maritime emergency hotline and coordinates rescue operations at sea.

During the renovation, the building remained in use and the MRCC stayed fully operational. To ensure continuity, the works were carried out in multiple phases and sub-phases. STRABAG’s scope included renovation, refurbishment, partial new-build extensions, and coordination of finishes and technical installations—such as HVAC systems, a new emergency power unit, and a high-voltage cabin.

Phase 1 involved renovating the second floor, including the operational work area, façade upgrades, and construction of a new emergency staircase. Due to the MRCC’s need for uninterrupted service, this phase was divided into three sub-phases, which included a complete interior overhaul and the phased addition of a new glass extension.

Phase 2 focused on renovating the ground floor interior and exterior entrance areas.

Phase 3 included installing extraction ducts and ventilation systems on the second floor.
