Neptunium Swimming Pool
The Neptunium swimming pool has been restored to its former splendour: fully renovated with respect for its cultural heritage, incorporating sustainable technologies and offering enhanced comfort for visitors of all ages.
The Neptunium public swimming pool in Schaerbeek, dating back to 1957, required a comprehensive renovation after sixty years to meet modern safety and hygiene standards and to reduce energy consumption. STRABAG Belgium was entrusted with the complete refurbishment of the pool and the renewal of all technical installations. As the modernist building is part of the architectural heritage of the Brussels-Capital Region, several original elements were carefully preserved during the works.
The communal changing rooms are located on the first floor, while individual cubicles and lockers are positioned on the mezzanine. Some of these new facilities have been designed for families with young children. To improve accessibility, certain existing changing rooms with their characteristic partitions were renovated, and a lifting platform was installed for people with reduced mobility. Access routes from the changing areas to the small pool were completely redesigned to create space for showers, toilets and footbaths.
Safety was further enhanced with the installation of a modern surveillance system featuring both regular and underwater cameras to help prevent accidents. Comfort and energy efficiency were improved by insulating roofs and walls, and the main building’s roof was fully renewed. The façades were insulated and plastered, while the front façade facing Houffalize Square remained unchanged. Side façades and stairwell windows were replaced with aluminium-framed double glazing. The existing slide was removed to comply with safety standards, and the solarium was demolished and rebuilt. The old heating system was replaced with high-efficiency condensing boilers, and the ventilation system was upgraded.
Inside, the renovation respected the original architectural character. Both pools received new tiling, and the surrounding areas, including the solarium, were completely renewed.
