BREEAM Excellent for Elia Kruisem
Antwerp, 19 June 2026
The Elia Kruisem project has achieved a BREEAM Excellent certification, with a strong overall score of 71.9%. This confirms the project’s high sustainability ambitions and the well-considered approach taken to realise them.
From the outset, the project was designed in accordance with the BREEAM methodology, a sustainability standard typically set by the client and guiding the entire design and construction process. Together with our partners Wema, ArchitectesAssoc+, Arcadis and Encon, we translated this ambition into a concrete and measurable outcome.
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is an internationally recognised system that assesses the sustainability of buildings and construction projects. It considers various aspects, including energy, materials, waste, water, mobility, as well as health and comfort. With a score of 71.9%, Elia Kruisem falls within the Excellent category, representing a particularly strong result.
A structured approach as the key to success
Achieving a BREEAM certification requires a structured and well-founded approach. Within this project, we implemented a comprehensive monitoring and reporting framework for sustainability measures. By systematically collecting, tracking and reporting data, we make sustainability not only visible, but also demonstrable in line with BREEAM requirements.
In addition, we were able to build on our experience with DGNB sustainable construction sites. The methodology we developed for this — focusing on energy, waste, materials and emissions, among other aspects — aligns seamlessly with the BREEAM credits for which STRABAG is responsible as contractor.
This resulted in:
- efficient data collection
- audit-ready reporting
- strong synergy between DGNB and BREEAM
- increased certainty of achieving a high score
Delivering sustainability together
Thanks to the close collaboration between all partners and an integrated approach, Elia Kruisem has evolved into a project in which sustainability is made concrete and measurable.
With this result, we once again underline our ambition to embed sustainable construction practices in every project — and, together with our clients and partners, to contribute to future-oriented and responsible infrastructure.
